Sarawak tops Covid-19 daily toll nationwide for 11th time in just 19 days this month

KUCHING, April 19: Today marks the 11th time in only 19 days this month Sarawak has topped the Covid-19 daily toll in the whole of Malaysia.

According to the reports by State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) today, Sarawak recorded a total of 589 new cases across 24 districts.


Since April 1, Sarawak has been registering a three-digit figure of positive cases every day, with the lowest being 211 cases on April 8 and the highest of 960 cases on April 16.

Today, the districts reporting new cases were Sibu (133), Bintulu (99), Mukah (82), Kapit (72), Kuching (44), Sarikei (31), Miri (30), Meradong (16), Tatau (16), Sri Aman (13), Selangau (11), Matu (8), Kanowit (6), Tanjung Manis (5), Bukit Mabong (4), Serian (4), Pakan (4), Samarahan (3), Subis (2), Dalat (2), Kabong (1), Song (1), Saratok (1) and Julau (1).

With that, the committee said the cumulative number of positive cases in Sarawak now stands at 24,529.

Out of the 589 cases today, there are 321 cases that were detected following close contact screenings where 12 of them were symptomatic.

Another 152 cases were individual screenings from existing active clusters where 10 showed signs and symptoms of Covid-19 infection.

Adding on, there were 60 cases that were from symptomatic tests in health facilities and another 56 cases were other screenings from health facilities.

Meanwhile, SDMC reported three fatality cases from Covid-19 in Bintulu, Sibu and Miri today, thus pushing Sarawak’s Covid-19 death toll to 140.

With 346 new recoveries throughout Sarawak, there are still 5,604 patients who are receiving treatment in the hospitals across the State. — DayakDaily
