KUCHING, Feb 19: The Sarawak government will submit its nomination for Kuching City to be recognised as a Unesco Global Geopark in 2026.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said Kuching City, an area under Sarawak Delta, is already declared as the 6th national geopark under the National Geopark Development Programme.

“The experts are here and they are evaluating on our assets as part of the geopark. If that happens, then we can be connected to other areas declared as global geoparks too,” he said when officiating at the grand opening ceremony of Sheration Kuching Hotel, here last night.

Abang Johari pointed out the Sarawak government is also focusing on connecting Kuching with Jeju Island in South Korea, which is a Unesco global geopark.

He also said that this will enable travellers from there to come to Kuching geopark during South Korea’s winter.

“That’s why we need an airline. We can have direct flights from Korea to Kuching, including from Japan to Kuching, as well as the other Asian destinations.”

He said if the Unesco recognition materialised, it will not only benefit the hotel industry in the State, but everyone in the tourism industry. — DayakDaily
