KUCHING, Oct 13: Sarawak plans to integrate Bintulu Port and other ports across the State under a unified regulatory framework led by the Sarawak Ports Authority to streamline port management, improve logistics efficiency and competitiveness, and support long-term economic growth.

Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development Datuk Majang Renggi said the integration would also involve grouping ports according to their geographical advantages and industrial strengths to prevent overlapping functions, restructuring port tariffs, upgrading facilities and infrastructure, and transforming port management into corporate entities.

“These measures is to transform the port management into a corporate entity to enhance competitiveness and ensure long-term sustainability,” he said during the tabling of the Supply Bill 2027 at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) today.

He said the takeover of Bintulu Port from the federal government was a strategic move to strengthen Sarawak’s role in planning, coordinating and developing its port and logistics networks in an integrated manner.

As the country’s largest liquefied natural gas (LNG) export hub and a major gateway for trade, Bintulu Port would be further developed through improved operational efficiency, modern infrastructure and stronger digital systems.

Majang said the State government would ensure uninterrupted port operations without disrupting port users and trading partners.

Through the Bintulu Port Authority, close and sustained monitoring would be carried out on critical areas, including operational efficiency, cargo capacity, service standards and vessel turnaround time.

He said the State government would also optimise existing facilities, expand capacity to meet market demand, modernise work processes to reduce bureaucracy, and improve time and cost efficiency across the logistics chain.

Additionally, regular engagement sessions with importers, exporters, shipping companies and transport agencies would also be held to address industry needs and strengthen confidence among investors and maritime stakeholders.

Majang added that Bintulu Port’s future direction would be aligned with the Sarawak Ports Master Plan to support sustainable economic growth and strengthen the State’s position as an important regional logistics hub. — DayakDaily
