KUCHING, Oct 21: Sarawak aims to replicate the principles of sustainable and balanced growth observed in Norway across its towns and regional growth nodes, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan.
Awang Tengah, who is also the Minister for Natural Resources and Urban Development (MUDeNR), said this following a courtesy visit from Dr Hans-Jacob Roald of the Western Norway University of Applied Sciences at Wisma Sumber Alam on Monday (Oct 20).
The meeting marked a significant follow-up to Sarawak’s working visit to Oslo and Bergen, Norway, from Feb 17 to 24, 2025, which was led by Awang Tengah. The visit provided the Sarawak delegation with valuable insights into Norway’s successful urban planning models, sustainable development strategies, and cultural integration initiatives.
In a statement, he noted that the Norwegian experience reaffirmed that Sarawak’s Post-Covid Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030) is well aligned with international best practices, particularly in advancing sustainability, regional balance, and inclusive growth.
Awang Tengah emphasised that collaboration with international experts such as Roald will strengthen Sarawak’s ability to plan and implement resilient urban and regional development projects.
During the discussion, both parties exchanged views on integrating economic growth with environmental stewardship, mirroring Norway’s success in balancing modern infrastructure with the preservation of natural landscapes and cultural heritage.
“The Norwegian experience has shown that development can go hand in hand with environmental responsibility and cultural respect. Sarawak aims to replicate these principles across our towns and regional growth nodes,” Awang Tengah said.
He also underscored Sarawak’s commitment to empowering rural communities and ensuring equitable progress across all regions.
Drawing from Norway’s example, he said the State will continue to embed sustainability, innovation, and community well-being in its development agenda, particularly in emerging areas such as Kapit, where transformative urban and infrastructure projects are underway. — DayakDaily
