KUCHING, Oct 31: Sarawak will host the first-ever Deka Fit competition in Southeast Asia on Nov 12.

Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the competition is expected to attract 1,500 athletes with the chance to win the top prize of RM2,000.

“We hope by having this inaugural competition in Sarawak, it will become the benchmark for fitness level for athletes around the region, making Sarawak a sports tourism destination,” he said during a press conference held at Baitulmakmur II Building in Petra Jaya today.

According to Abdul Karim, 1,000 athletes from over eight countries, namely Malaysia, Brunei, Thailand, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, UAE, and South Africa, have registered for the competition.

“We hope to attract more participants in the coming week, especially those from Southeast Asia,” he added.

Deka Fit Sarawak 2022 is an international decathlon of functional fitness competition under the Spartan brand where athletes compete through Deka zones preceded by 500 meters of running in between each zone to reach the finishing line.

It provides a well-rounded functional test for all fitness levels with 10 functional areas of movement: lunges, rowing, box jumping, farmers carry, air bikes, tank pull, and many more.

The zone sequence and flow are designed to start with basic movement throughout the early zones, followed by full body focus in the last five zones.
