KUCHING, March 29: Sarawak will host the Asian Association for Sport Management (AASM) Conference 2023 at Imperial Hotel here on Aug 19 and 20 this year.

According to a report by Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Sarawak (MYSED) Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said it is the first time ever for AASM to be hosted by a Borneo region after Sarawak won the hosting rights.

The conference would also mark a milestone in AASM’s history as it welcomes members of the Gulf Countries Sport Management Association whose knowledge and experience in organising the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar will be insightful for delegates, especially for those organising sustainable, mega sporting events.

“We expect about 500 delegates from over 25 countries across the world to take part in the conference,” he said at AASM 2023 press conference at Baitulmakmur II Building here today.

The theme for AASM 2023 is “The Asian Sport Industry and the Sustainability Agenda: Action and Education through Sport”.

Abdul Karim further said the hosting of the conference echoes the Sarawak government’s goal in prioritising its sustainability agendas and aligning the destination’s development path with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In the meantime, he believed the conference is timely because Malaysia Games (Sukma) 2024 will also take place in Sarawak.

Also present were Deputy Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Dato Gerald Rentap Jabu; MYSED permanent secretary Morshidi Frederick; Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC) chief executive officer Awang Putrayusrie Abang Reduan; Business Events Sarawak general manager for Business Development and Marketing, Jason Tan Chin Foo; AASM executive committee member Dr Wirdati Mohd Radzi and Kuching Badminton Association president Dr Ong Kong Swee. — DayakDaily
