SERIAN, Feb 18: In an effort to involve the public in shaping Sarawak’s new airline, the government plans to launch a competition for the most eye-catching and innovative livery designs for AirBorneo, Sarawak’s first-ever airline.
Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, made this announcement today following the unveiling of AirBorneo, a move that has sparked widespread excitement after the historic acquisition of MASwings by the Sarawak government.
“I’ve seen netizens sharing their creative livery designs on social media, and I must say, all the designs are beautiful and inspiring.
“To tap into this enthusiasm, we will create a competition to find the best livery designs for AirBorneo,” he said when addressing the launching of Sarawak Basic Needs Assistance (SKAS) at Serian Convention Centre today.

The announcement of AirBorneo on Feb 12, 2025, has ignited a wave of creativity across social media, with Sarawakians enthusiastically showcasing their ideas.
Some designs feature Sarawak’s rich cultural heritage, including intricate Dayak motifs and vibrant imagery of Borneo’s lush rainforests and wildlife. Others offer sleek, modern designs, focusing on eco-friendly themes and futuristic aesthetics.
Abang Johari further emphasised that AirBorneo will adopt a business model that aligns with the interests and economic needs of Sarawak.
“While I cannot reveal all the details now, as Sarawak’s economy continues to grow, we will need better connectivity and affordable airfares to allow our children to come home and for visitors to experience places like Serian, which we aim to make the ‘New Zealand of Sarawak’,” he said.
He added that AirBorneo will initially focus on strengthening air connectivity within Sarawak, Sabah, and Indonesia, before expanding to key international destinations.
“This will enhance our ties with Indonesia, where many people frequently visit Sarawak. It will also support our growing medical tourism sector, especially with the development of three private hospitals in Batu Lintang, Tabuan Jaya, and Satok,” he elaborated.
The transition of MASwings to AirBorneo is expected to take 18 months, ensuring a smooth changeover and minimal disruptions to air services. — DayakDaily
