MUKAH, Dec 7: Sarawak will soon establish three astronomy centres in Miri, Bintulu, and Kuching, designed for youth interested in exploring the field of astronomy.
Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg emphasieed that the government has consistently supported youth initiatives through various programmes and policies, working in collaboration with all stakeholders.
“The Sarawak government remains committed to developing initiatives that benefit our youth,” he said in his speech, which was delivered by Minister for Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah at the launch of Sarawak Youth Day 2024 today.
Abang Johari also highlighted that the Sarawak government has introduced a new financial aid initiative for students pursuing higher education, with a RM30 million allocation.
“Students from low-income families will receive a one-time RM1,200 pocket money assistance. In line with our 2026 goal of providing free tertiary education to Sarawakians, students will not have to pay tuition fees if they are accepted into Sarawak-owned universities,” he added.
Furthermore, the Sarawak government will allocate over RM90 million for repayments of the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) loans and continue providing RM500 book vouchers and free laptops for university students from the B40 group.
“These initiatives underscore the vital role that youth play in Sarawak’s development. I believe investing in youth is the most valuable investment for Sarawak’s future,” he said.
Abang Johari also urged Sarawak’s youth to continue enhancing their skills, especially in technology, entrepreneurship, and other sectors aligned with the current economic trends, to prepare for future challenges.
“The world is evolving rapidly and is full of new opportunities that require creative thinking and the right skills. I am confident that the youth of Sarawak have extraordinary potential to become leaders in technology and innovation.
