ASAJAYA, Dec 4: Sarawak is set to build its first-ever elevated highway, a project expected to transform transport and development in Samarahan and Asajaya, says Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

Abdul Karim, who is also the Asajaya assemblyman, explained that the elevated highway, essentially a long flyover stretching from Kampung Baru to Sebuyau, will allow traffic to flow above ground while leaving the land below free for farming and other activities.

“Imagine a highway running above the entire stretch. People can still carry out agricultural activities below. It doesn’t interfere and it will also help develop the area,” he said during the Minor Rural Project (MRP) grant presentation for the Asajaya constituency at the Asajaya Sports Complex today.

He added that the project will significantly reduce traffic accidents and maintenance costs, especially along roads built on soft peat soil.

“Every week, I hear about accidents from Sadong Jaya to Tambirat. The roads are narrow, uneven and vehicles often collide. If the road was one-way, accidents could be avoided.

“And as we all know, peat soil is unstable. Even after six months of construction, roads often become wavy. Trucks, motorcycles and cars all damage it, and maintenance alone costs hundreds of millions of ringgit each year.

“But with an elevated highway built on piles, the maintenance cost will be much lower. The initial cost is higher, but the long-term benefits are enormous,” he added.

Abdul Karim also said another stretch of elevated highway will run from Gedong through Serian-Gedong, Sebandi and Tambirat, ultimately connecting to the coast. — DayakDaily
