KUCHING, May 16: Sarawak is set to construct its first-ever cascading dam in Sungai Gaat in Kapit as part of its push to become a regional energy supplier, says Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

Speaking at the Sarawak Energy Vendor Excellence Awards 2025 held at a local hotel here earlier tonight, Abang Johari revealed that he has received a letter from the local community in Sungai Gaat agreeing to the development of the dam.

“I have received a letter from our people in Sungai Gaat. They have agreed for us to do cascading dam in Sungai Gaat.

“In other words, that will be the first cascading dam we are going to do,” he said.

He further stated that he has told Sarawak Energy Berhad Group Chief Executive Officer Datuk Sharbini Suhaili and the top management of the company that the Sarawak government is trying to get some funds to start this project.

“And with cascading dam, we have to also do the pump hydro mechanism to enhance our power supply.

“With that set of power supply and also the abundance of energy, we can become a regional energy supplier,” he added. — DayakDaily
