KUCHING, Aug 31: Sarawak will begin exporting hydrogen to Singapore this year, making it the first State in ASEAN to export hydrogen to a neighbouring country.

Speaking at the State-level National Day 2025 celebration in Sarikei, Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg explained that Sarawak will start exporting hydrogen to Singapore in the form of Magnesium Hydride, a solid form of hydrogen that can be reconverted into hydrogen upon arrival in Singapore.

“This is the first hydrogen exported by a country in ASEAN to another country,” he said in his speech.

Earlier this week, it was reported that Sarawak is set to export its first batch of green hydrogen to Singapore, with Sarawak Economic Development Corporation Energy (SEDCE) currently in talks with several potential offtakers for green hydrogen export in solid form.

Abang Johari further highlighted that Sarawak’s leadership in energy development has also been recognised by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and the Sultan of Brunei, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, in a joint statement issued during the 26th Malaysia-Brunei Annual Leaders’ Consultations last week.

“In terms of renewable energy, Sarawak is targeting to generate 15 GigaWatts of green energy by 2035 as a step towards making Sarawak an ASEAN battery that can attract more investment for green industries,” Abang Johari said.

He also expressed hope that the initiative to create an ASEAN energy grid will be discussed at the 47th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur this October.

Meanwhile, he shared that with the Sarawak Hydrogen Economy Roadmap, Sarawak Sustainable Blueprint 2030, and the Sarawak Energy Transition Policy (SET-P), these initiatives would further strengthen Sarawak’s position as a green energy leader in the region.

“These initiatives also ensure a balance between economic development and environmental sustainability, in line with our aspiration to achieve net zero by 2050,” he added.

Gracing the event were Sarawak governor Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and his wife Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi.

Also present were Deputy Premiers Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan; Minister for Women, Early Childhood, and Community Wellbeing Development Sarawak and Minister in charge of the State-level National Day 2025 celebrations Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah; Sarawak Legislative Assembly Speaker Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar; acting Sarawak Secretary Dato Sri Dr Muhammad Abdullah Zaidel; and Sarikei MP Dato Sri Huang Tiong Sii, who is also the Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability and Repok assemblyman. – DayakDaily
