KUCHING, Sept 3: Sarawak’s tenpin bowling squad is aiming to win the overall title for the fifth time at the 20th Malaysian Games (Sukma) 2022 next September.

According to a report by Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), team manager Robert Lu Nam Min said the State athletes need to win as many as three or four gold medals to achieve that target.

He said the tenpin bowling squad has been making thorough preparations since Sukma 2018 to ensure that the overall championship once again belongs to Sarawak.

“As I have often said to the Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC) chief executive officer, the contingent chief and the assistant contingent chief, we will try to convert the silver medal into a gold medal.

“To be the overall champion, we need to win at least three to four gold medals. If we win five, we will definitely become champion.

“We have always vowed to retain the championship, and that is our target,” he said after a training session at Megalanes Sarawak Emart Batu Kawa recently.

Robert who is also Amateur Tenpin Bowling Association of Sarawak (ABAS) vice president acknowledged the tough challenge that the team from the Peninsula will give to its athletes at this year’s Sukma games as they have easy access at the main venue which is located at Sunway Pyramid.

Following that, he said the State team had also underwent phase one and two training at the venue last July to enable the athletes to adapt to the facilities.

“This time we will go to Sunway Pyramid for the third phase training programme before Sukma starts. I hope the coach can strengthen the confidence of the athletes in Sukma in the future,” he added.

Asked on Sarawak’s main challenger at Sukma this time, Robert said Kuala Lumpur is expected to be the main competitor in the Men’s category and Sabah for the Women’s event.

For the record, Sarawak emerged as the overall champion in the tenpin bowling event at the 2010 Sukma in Perak, 2014 in Perlis, 2016 in Sarawak and 2018 in Perak.
