MIRI, Oct 29: The Sarawak government is targeting 20,000 housing units over the next five years to expand homeownership opportunities, particularly for first-time buyers, under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP).
According to a report by TVS, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said the target is a significant increase from the 3,000 to 4,000 housing units built over the previous five years.
“Over the past five years, we built only around 3,000 to 4,000 housing units. However, for the next five years, we are targeting 20,000 units through collaboration between the private sector, Sarawak government and federal government,” he said.
Dr Sim, who is also Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government, said this when speaking at the handover ceremony for the Rumah Spektra Permata (RSP) Permyjaya III project here today.
He said the target aims to make homeownership more accessible, particularly for first-time buyers.
He added that affordable housing must also meet minimum standards to ensure residents’ comfort and basic needs are met.
“We have set minimum standards for the houses built, requiring a floor area of at least 700 square feet, three bedrooms, two bathrooms and parking facilities to ensure that the homes provided are not only affordable but also comfortable to live in,” Dr Sim said.
Meanwhile, the RSP Permyjaya III project involves the construction of 101 single-storey terrace houses, with a total scheme value of RM33.9 million. — DayakDaily
