SIBU, Jan 11: Sarawak is ready to make history with the implementation of a large-scale green energy project, made possible through a strategic collaboration with Japan.

In a news report by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the project is expected to make Sarawak a key driver of clean energy in Malaysia, with its finalisation anticipated by May this year.

“The Prime Minister (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) himself acknowledged that Sarawak is the only state capable of making a significant contribution to climate change management,” he said at the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Central Zone Branches’ Delegates Conference in Sibu, today.

Abang Johari, who is also chairman of the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), explained that Sarawak will develop the green energy chemical industry by adding new ammonia plants and completing the existing methanol facilities in Bintulu.

“It was mentioned that Sarawak and Japan will produce ammonia. We are already producing methanol in Bintulu.

“We will also be developing an ammonia plant with our resources.

“This is a massive plan between Malaysia and Japan and it is expected to be finalised in May,” he said.

The Premier also said experts believe there will be significant changes in the global energy sector in the next five years, where synthetic energy will replace traditional sources such as oil and gas.

“By mixing carbon and green hydrogen, we can produce synthetic gas that can become the world’s main energy source,” he explained.

Also present were the Deputy Prime Minister Dato Sri Fadillah Yusof, Deputy Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Speaker Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar, Minister of Works Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi, and other distinguished guest. — DayakDaily
