KUCHING, June 27: Sarawak took centre stage in the global conversation on green transition and sustainability at the World Green & Sustainability Summit 2024, which took place on June 25 in Georgetown, Penang.
According to a press release, the summit, organised by the KSI Strategic Institute for Asia Pacific, was inaugurated by His Excellency Tun Dato Seri Utama Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak, the Governor of the State of Penang.
Dr Hazland Abang Hipni, Sarawak Deputy Minister for Energy and Environmental Sustainability (Meesty), delivered a keynote address highlighting the State’s efforts to ensure a green transition to renewable energy in accordance with established plans.
He stated that Sarawak is actively working on initiatives such as hydropower development, solar and floating solar, wind energy, wave kinetic energy, green hydrogen development, bioenergy, synthetic fuels, e-methanol, carbon capture and storage, biofuel, and sustainable aviation fuels.
“These initiatives are not just about reducing our carbon footprint but also about creating new revenue streams for Sarawak and Malaysia,” Dr Hazland stated.
He further reaffirmed Sarawak’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
The summit focused on accelerating the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and promoting green transition and renewable energy.
It also emphasised the importance of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles and the circular economy. Discussions centred on developing green cities, smart mobility, and advancing the 4Ps—Planet, People, Prosperity, and Partnership—to enhance climate action.
The event underscored the need for public-private-people partnerships to achieve sustainable growth. It addressed key challenges in promoting partnerships for climate action, energy transition, and sustainable investments.
The summit also shared best practices in ESG and the circular economy.
Notable attendees include Tan Sri Michael Yeoh, President of the Strategic Institute for Asia Pacific, and Tan Sri Kho Tsu Koon, former Chief Minister of Penang. — DayakDaily
