KUCHING, Oct 24: Sarawak Taekwondo Association (WTF) junior athletes recently took home 13 gold, seven silver, and nine bronze medals at the 12th TM (WTF)–KBS–Milo National Junior Taekwondo Championship 2023 following an excellent performance during the national meet held in Negeri Sembilan over the weekend.
According to a press release, the said event which drew 1,350 participants was organised by Taekwondo Malaysia (WTF) and supported by the Ministry of Youth and Sports Malaysia (KBS).
“The three-day national tournament weekend was full of excitement as supporters flooded into Dewan Tuanku Canselor, Negeri Sembilan, to witness and support the amazing games played by the junior athletes representing various states and premier clubs.
“WTF president Azizul Annuar Adenan has remarked that he is very impressed with our Sarawak team’s achievements and overall performance,” read the press release.
Azizul commented: “Our junior Anak Sarawak selected from Kuching, Bintulu, Sibu, and Miri Divisions had put up a spirited fight on their games debut in Negeri Sembilan last week.
“Their total medal feat has led the Sarawak team to the Grand Champion (title) in Poomsae event, overall team champion in Poomsae cadet 12-14-years-old category, overall team champion in Poomsae 15-17-years-old category, 1st runner up in Poomsae super cadet 9-11-years-old category, 2nd runner up in Kyorugi Cadet 12-14-years-old-category, and overall team 1st runner up in Kyorugi event.”
In the Kyorugi event, the Sarawak gold medalists were Daniel Kon Cheng Hee (9-12-years-old male light weight), Calvin Iester Lim Teck Shen (9-12-years-old male heavy weight), Ammar Khalish Shamsuri (12-14-years-old male flyweight), Edison Phang Kheng Kai (12-14-years-old male light weight), Hugh Teng Chen Hang (12-14-years-old male welterweight), and Syamimi Lee Xing (15-17-years-old female flyweight).
The Sarawak silver medalists were Hendra Teng Yi Jing (9-11-years-old female middleweight), Pretty Amisha Amanda Francesca (12-14-years-old-female heavy weight), and Jong Thian Fatt (15-17-years-old male heavy weight). The Sarawak bronze medalists were Emir Rayyan Zeffni Abdullah (12-14-years-old male lightweight), Liew Yuan Song (12-14-years-old male middleweight), Chloe Tan You Xin (12-14-years-old female middleweight), and Mohd Zulhafiz Zulhadi (15-17-years-old male heavy weight).
In the Poomsae event, the Sarawak gold medalists were Mohammad Ariffin Mohammad Asnawi Lau (individual male 9-11-years-old), Anuwath A/L Sarat (individual male 12-14-years-old), Feadealis Kom Twin (individual male 15-17-years-old), Anuwath A/L Sarat and Iris Nur Irdina Mohd Yusof (mix pair 12-14-years-old), Feadealis Kom Twin and Zara Nur Zafirah Mohd Yusof (mix pair 15-17-years-old), Abigail Lawietha Dustin, Nur Aeen Abdullah, and Nur Eeen Abdullah (female team 12-14-years-old), Dione Chen Wei Zhi, Dini Amalia Mohamad Ibrani Shahrimin, and Jessie Vannessa Stephen (female team 15-17-years-old).
Meanwhile, the Sarawak silver medalists were Abigail Lawietha Dustin (female individual 12-14-years-old), Umairah Elsa Al-Fatinah Mohamad Yusuf, Aleesya Maisara Mohamad Nor Arbi, and Eleopatra Eva Landan (female team 9-11-years-old), Ammar Zafran, Rio Lim Tsuan Tzer, and Franz Xenfritz Ngalambai Franklyne Joe (male team 9-11-years-old), Ammar Irfan Hedair, Aiman Abdullah Azrol, and Aldric Jayden Pui (male team 12-14-years-old).
The Sarawak bronze medalists were Harry Daniel Hunter (male individual 12-14-years-old), Zara Nur Zafirah Mohd Yusof (female individual 15-17-years-old), Mohammad Ariffin Mohammad Asnawi Lau, and Kelly Ngu Yan Xin (mix pair 9-11-years-old), Iris Nur Irdina Mohd Yusof, Cinta Kirana Mohd Nazid, and Awanis Maisara Mohamad Nor Arbi (female team 12-14-years-old), and Fernando Emmanuel Franky, Wisdom Ting Wei Zhi, and Vincent Lim Jia Yang (male team 15-17-years-old).
The Sarawak team was led by Grand Master Tan Check Joon, assisted by team manager Master Pui Jak Joon, coaches Nguyen Thi Mong Quynh, Purim Purintaphiban, Tan Cheng Qiang, Wong Ing Sing, Steffano Atom Stephen, Eimran Ghaffary Mohamad Daud, Marylyne Bungan Lian, and Virtlam Umpau. — DayakDaily
