KUCHING, Oct 10: In a harmonious crescendo of melodies and memories, the Sarawak State Symphony Orchestra (SONS) marked the grand milestone of its 35th year with a resplendent gala performance within the majestic halls of the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) last night (Oct 9).
According to a press handout, the concert, meticulously curated by the collaborative efforts of SONS and the Sarawak Arts Council (SAC), featured a rich tapestry of talents—conductors, singers, musicians, choirs, professional dancers—hailing from the colourful corners of our diverse State.
“The goal of organising this concert is to celebrate the 35th anniversary of SONS by introducing SONS, SAC to the public, appreciating the services of SONS musicians for their involvement throughout the establishment, providing entertainment to visitors, and encouraging the participation of musicians and visitors of various ages as an encouragement of music art tourism in Sarawak,” read the press handout.
Gracing the occasion was Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts (MTCP) Sarawak Minister Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, who showered the performers with accolades and celebrated their exceptional talents.
“With a wealth of experience and a team of exceptionally talented musicians, I am confident that the Sarawak State Symphony Orchestra’s musical journey will continue to thrive in both the domestic and international music industries.
“With high dedication, passion, and love for the art of music, the Sarawak State Symphony Orchestra has reached the glory we witness today.
“Simultaneously, there has been a rise in the number of Sarawak children who are honing their artistic abilities through art programmes organised by the Sarawak State Symphony Orchestra. These programmes showcase performances that highlight the exceptional talent of local children in the field of art, resulting in recognition both locally and internationally,” Abdul Karim stated in his speech.
Within the vibrant ambiance of the event, a heartfelt tribute unfolded, honouring the venerable conductors who have devoted three decades of their lives to the service of SONS. Among the distinguished honorees were Datuk Marcus Leong, Shafiee Obe Hairunie, Dr Geraldine Law-Lee, and Yap Chiew Phin.
Also honoured for their contributions to the musical world were musicians Lai Moo Na, Jong Thien Kai, and Stephen Jeremiah Adam.
Local celebrities like Bob Yusof, Ng Chien Chien, and Mark Cassidy also performed at the event.
The event was attended by various dignitaries and officials, including Sarawak State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki; MTCP Deputy Ministers Datuk Snowdan Lawan and Datuk Sebastian Ting; Deputy State Secretary Datu Hii Chang Kee; MTCP permanent secretary Datu Sherrina Hussaini; and Abdul Karim’s wife, Datin Zuraini Abdul Jabbar. — DayakDaily
