KUCHING, July 22: Padang Merdeka burst into vibrant life with a breathtaking kaleidoscope of colors, as thousands of people gathered to celebrate Sarawak’s glorious 60 Years of Independence.
This dazzling parade weaved a heartwarming tale of unity, resilience, love, and respect, capturing the essence of Sarawak’s indomitable spirit.
Over 3,000 participants from Sarawak’s diverse ethnic groups came together, representing 75 contingents from various government departments, agencies, educational institutions, associations, and non-governmental organisations (NGOs).
The atmosphere was filled with jubilation and an overwhelming sense of pride, as participants and ordinary citizens carried with them the dreams and aspirations of Sarawak. It was a momentous celebration of the achievements and progress made over the past six decades, a testament to the resilience and determination of the people.
The vibrant morning commenced with the traditional flag-raising ceremony, symbolising the unwavering pride of the Sarawakian people.
The parade kicked off with the grand entrance of the Merdeka Convoy, which had traversed the breadth and length of Sarawak since May 28. This was followed by the Sarawak contingent which proudly displayed the flags of Sarawak from different eras from 1946 to present day, representing the rich history and evolution of the region.
Among the special contingents were esteemed veterans from the defense force, including the revered Iban trackers, Sarawak Rangers, Rascom, and Armed Forces. Additionally, a contingent representing diverse religious groups added to the spectacle and significance of the event.
The other 60 contingents that took part in the parade, offered a captivating journey through Sarawak’s extraordinary past from the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, to the new millennium. Participants adorned in colourful attire, traditional clothing, and nostalgic accessories brought back the retro charm and swayed to the beat of pop tunes.
As the parade marched forward, an infectious energy spread through the crowd, with smiles lighting up every face and the music resonating with the rhythm of their hearts.
Memories of the challenges faced, milestones achieved, and the unwavering spirit that united them all flash before everyone’s minds, fostering a deep sense of gratitude and unity.
The Defence Force made a striking final entry, comprising police, army, marine, air force, and firefighters, saluting the fearless heroes who protect our freedom and beloved nation. Sarawakians stand together in gratitude on this momentous occasion.
As the parade reached its grand finale, the contingents formed the number 60, symbolising the triumphant spirit of a region that has come so far. This jubilant occasion not only honours the past but also ignites hope for a promising future.
Indeed, the kaleidoscope of colors at Padang Merdeka mirrors the kaleidoscope of dreams and aspirations that define the spirit of Sarawak – a tapestry woven with unity, love, and respect, creating a harmonious and vibrant society for generations to come.
This celebration of 60 Years of Independence is a testament to the resilience and unity that have shaped Sarawak’s history and will continue to shape its future.
