KUCHING, Nov 3: Sarawak’s private healthcare sector has taken a major leap forward with a RM20 million investment by Borneo Medical Centre (BMC) in two world-class cancer treatment and diagnostic systems, the Halcyon Radiotherapy System and the Gallium-68 Prostate-Specific Membrane Antigen (PSMA) PET/CT Scan.
The new facilities, officially launched today and the first of their kind on Borneo Island, mark a significant step forward in expanding access to advanced medical technology for Sarawakians.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Abdul Rahman Johari Tun Openg, in a speech read by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, said the investment marks a turning point for Sarawak’s healthcare landscape by bringing state-of-the-art cancer treatment closer to home.
“It is encouraging to see Borneo Medical Centre, a homegrown private medical group, investing RM20 million in cutting-edge technology to serve the needs of Sarawakians.
“This reduces the need for patients to travel to Kuala Lumpur or overseas for such treatments,” he said.
He further highlighted that the Halcyon Radiotherapy System is among the most advanced in the world, allowing faster, more precise, and comfortable cancer treatment while minimising radiation exposure to healthy tissues.
Complementing the system, the Gallium-68 PSMA PET/CT service enables highly accurate imaging, particularly for early detection of prostate cancer, leading to better outcomes and survival rates.
The Premier also emphasised that BMC’s initiative aligns with Sarawak’s vision of becoming a regional hub for healthcare excellence.
“By integrating technology and innovation, we are not only improving medical outcomes but also contributing to Sarawak’s position as a regional hub for healthcare excellence,” he stressed.
He added that Sarawak’s growing network of modern medical facilities, skilled professionals, and its natural healing environment position the state as an attractive destination for medical tourism across Borneo and neighbouring countries.
BMC’s new systems reaffirm its role as a leading private healthcare provider in Sarawak, supporting the state’s ongoing push toward self-reliance and high-quality healthcare access for all. —DayakDaily
