Sarawak sees sharp drop in new Covid-19 cases in Epid Week 18

KUCHING, May 9: Sarawak continued to see a significant decrease in new Covid-19 cases during Epid (Epidemiological) Week 18 (April 30 to May 6), with 256 cases recorded compared to 610 cases during Epid Week 17 (April 24 to 30).

According to the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee’s (SDMC) weekly report, Kuching was the most affected district in the State during Epid Weeks 17 and 18, with 186 cases in Epid Week 17 and 52 cases in Epid Week 18.

Bintulu (94), Sibu (77), Miri (74), Samarahan (38), Serian (18), Limbang (15), and Mukah (10) are the seven districts which saw double-digit gains during Epid Week 17.

The remaining districts with single-digit case increases during Epid Week 17 are Sri Aman (9), Simunjan (8), Bau and Betong (7 each), Sarikei, Subis, and Julau (6 each), Asajaya and Matu (5 each), Lubok Antu, Kapit, Saratok, and Meradong (4 each), Lundu, Lawas, Kabong, and Tebedu (3 each), Kanowit, Dalat, Pakan, and Tatau (2 each), Pusa, Selangau, and Sebauh (1 each).

In Epid Week 18, Miri (41), Sibu (37), Bintulu (31), and Serian (17), saw double-digit increases in new cases.

The districts which reported single-digit gains during Epid Week 18 are Samarahan and Sarikei (9 each), Limbang and Subis (7 each), Pusa (6), Simunjan and Lawas (4 each), Mukah, Julau, Saratok, Meradong, Lundu, and Dalat (3 each), Sri Aman, Betong, Asajaya, Matu, Lubok Antu, and Marudi (2 each), and Bau and Selangau (1 each).

Meanwhile, Kuching recorded one Covid-19 death in Epid Week 17 and two deaths in Epid Week 18.

Additionally, in Epid Week 17, 606 new cases were classified as Category 1 (asymptomatic) and Category 2 (mild symptoms), while 4 new cases were classified as Category 3 (pneumonia patients), Category 4 (pneumonia patients requiring oxygen support), and Category 5 (pneumonia patients requiring ventilator support).

In Epid Week 18, 244 new cases were classified as Category 1 (asymptomatic) and Category 2 (mild symptoms), while 12 new cases were classified as Category 3 (pneumonia patients), Category 4 (pneumonia patients requiring oxygen support), and Category 5 (pneumonia patients requiring ventilator support).

The cumulative number of Covid-19 cases now stands at 305,318 in Epid Week 17 and 305,574 in Epid Week 18. — DayakDaily
