KUCHING, July 13: Visitor arrivals to Sarawak have shown a positive increase with 134,469 visitors received in June compared to 129,086 in May this year.

Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah has expressed optimism that Sarawak will be able to achieve its target of 1.2 million visitors this year.

“Sarawak’s tourism industry has shown very positive signs of recovery since the country’s borders were reopened to visitors on April 1.

“Sarawak has recorded a total of 573,619 visitor arrivals for the period of January to June 2022,” he said during a press conference on Malaysia Tourism Council (MTC) Gold Awards 2022 at his office in Baitulmakmur Complex II here today.

Noting that the Covid-19 pandemic has halted many iconic events and festivals, Abdul Karim emphasised that his ministry has been working very hard to initiate, encourage and support events and festivals.

“Since the beginning of the year, a series of iconic events have been successfully organised including Citrawarna in February as well as Sibu International Dance Festival, Spartan Race, Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF), and Borneo Jazz Festival in June,” he added.

Sarawak, he continued, has many more such events lined up for the rest of the year including the Borneo Cultural Festival and Tribute to Queen Concert this month (July).

Other exciting events coming up are the much-anticipated Kuching Festival, Kuching Marathon and Premier of Sarawak Cup Taekwondo Championship in August; Borneo Exchange Music Conference, Sibu International Base Jump, 5th International Borneo 4×4 Jamboree and Pesta Benak in September; Miri Marathon, Sarawak International Dragon Boat Festival, Borneo Classic Trail and Taste of Borneo Conference in October; Sarawak Regatta, Miri Country Music Festival, Dekafit and Miss Tourism International in November; and Countdown in December. — DayakDaily
