KUCHING, Oct 20: Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has concurred with the findings of a recent study by Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), which highlighted Sarawak and Sabah as exemplary models of social cohesion for Malaysia.
“According to the study, we should look at the social cohesion we have in Sarawak and Sabah.
“We are truly united. There are no divisions among us,” he said during the Lan Berambeh Anak Sarawak 2024 dinner at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre in Kuala Lumpur, broadcast live by Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS) last night (Oct 19).
Earlier in the event, National Unity Minister Dato Sri Aaron Ago Dagang informed that the UMS’ Social Cohesion Model Development Study for Sabah and Sarawak found that the level of social cohesion in the Borneo States is remarkably high.
He said the study revealed that differences in ethnicity, religion, background, and culture do not hinder social unity in Sarawak and Sabah.
Instead, the strong interpersonal relationships and close-knit communities in Sarawak, in particular, are dominant factors in fostering unity.
“The social cohesion observed in Sarawak and Sabah could serve as a model for national integration programs across Malaysia.
“Key values such as togetherness, openness, inclusivity, involvement, and equality are deeply embedded in the social fabric of Sarawak and Sabah, driving high levels of unity among their communities,” he stated.
However, the study also cautioned that social media presents a challenge, particularly for younger generations, who may be vulnerable to misinformation and sensitive issues that could disrupt harmony.
To address this, Aaron stressed the study’s recommendation for stricter enforcement of cyber laws to protect social cohesion.
