KUCHING, Oct 15: A total of 11 entities are involved in forest carbon credit activities in Sarawak, with only those holding Forest Carbon Licences allowed to proceed with carbon credit trading under the Forests (Forest Carbon Activity) Rules, 2022, with eight entities holding Carbon Study Permits covering 179,327 hectares are still required to complete studies before they can qualify for full licences.
Minister of Natural Resources and Urban Development Datuk Len Talif said Sarawak has approved three Forest Carbon Licences covering 56,806 hectares.
“Of the three licences, one is undergoing validation by a validation and verification body (VVB) recognised under international carbon standards, while the other two licences have recently been approved and granted to the licensees.
“Meanwhile, another eight entities have been granted Carbon Study Permits, covering a total area of 179,327 hectares.
“These permits allow the holders to conduct studies and prepare a Sarawak Project Design Document (SPDD), which is one of the requirements for obtaining a Forest Carbon Licence,” he said responding to Tebedu assemblyman during the question-and-answer session at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) sitting today.
He also addressed a related question from Daro assemblyman, saying one Carbon Study Permit had been issued for a Blue Carbon Project, excluding the Paloh and Serdeng areas.
However, Len Talif said no applications had been received for carbon projects in the Daro area to date. — DayakDaily
