Sarawak registers 1,964 Covid-19 cases with Kuching leading; 2 deaths in Kuching, Bau

KUCHING, Aug 21: Sarawak has recorded 1,964 new Covid-19 cases today, raising the cumulative number of cases to 96,528.

According to reports by State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) today, Kuching was still the district registering the highest daily toll of 697 cases.


Belaga, Samarahan, Lundu, Serian and Bau saw 285, 227, 217, 147 and 103 cases respectively.

Other districts that saw double-digit case numbers were Sibu (58), Bintulu (42), Simunjan (30), Miri (29), Tebedu (24), Sri Aman (19), Dalat (12), Mukah (10) and Selangau (10).

The remaining districts with new infections included Pusa (9), Song (9), Asajaya (7), Subis (7), Lubok Antu (5), Pakan (4), Sebauh (4), Kapit (3), Saratok (2), Beluru (2), Bukit Mabong (1) and Kanowit (1).

“Out of the 1,964 patients, 1,158 were detected following close contact screenings where 93 of them were symptomatic.

“Another 380 cases were of individual screenings from active clusters where 21 of them showed signs and symptoms of Covid-19 infection.

“Adding on, 160 cases were of symptomatic screenings and 266 cases were from other screenings in health facilities,” said SDMC in a statement on Covid-19 update today.

Of the total, SDMC noted 1,682 cases or 85.64 per cent from Category 1 whereby the patients do not develop any symptoms.

There were 280 patients with mild symptoms from Category 2, one from Category 3 with lung infections and another with lung infection while requiring oxygen in Category 4.

On Covid-19 fatality, two new cases were recorded in Kuching and Bau today, raising the Covid-19 death toll to 497.

The 94-year-old female from Kuching had hypertension and diabetes while the 90-year-old male from Bau had no comorbidities.

Meanwhile, 706 patients were discharged from hospitals across Sarawak with 13,942 active cases in isolation or treatment. — DayakDaily
