KUCHING, April 4: Sarawak has recorded 332 road accidents with five fatalities over six-day Op Selamat 24, from March 29 to April 3, in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri 2025.

Sarawak Police Commissioner Dato Mancha Ata said the number of fatal accidents had decreased by two cases or 28.6 per cent, from seven cases in Op Selamat 22/2024 to five cases this year.

“Motorcyclists accounted for the highest number of fatalities, with three victims or 60 per cent of the total five deaths recorded.

“This was followed by one fatality involving a four-wheel-drive vehicle (20 per cent) and one involving a lorry (20 per cent),” he said in a statement today.

Mancha added that the number of road accidents recorded during this year’s Op Selamat saw a decrease of 22 cases or 6.2 per cent, from 354 cases last year to 332 cases this year.

He attributed the accidents to driver negligence, including failure to control vehicles, speeding, head-on collisions, reckless maneuvering at junctions, and rear-end collisions.

Additionally, police issued a total of 6,707 summonses for various traffic offences, marking a 23.8 per cent drop or 2,097 fewer summonses compared to the previous Op Selamat.

“The reduction in summonses issued this year is due to the police’s focus on advocacy and ensuring smooth traffic flow for road users.

“However, targeted enforcement against violations that could lead to road accidents was still carried out,” Mancha stressed.

Overall, Op Selamat 24 involved strategies such as Op Lancar and Omnipresence, Show of Force, Enforcement by Objective, and advocacy on road safety to monitor and manage traffic conditions effectively. – DayakDaily
