KUCHING, Jan 3: The Sarawak government is ready to provide assistance to schools and clinics affected by floods, says Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.

Uggah, who is the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) chairman, said standard operating procedures (SOPs) have been put in place to ensure a quick and coordinated response.

“Last year, several schools and clinics were affected by floods and the Sarawak government stepped in to provide assistance to help them.

“The departments concerned also worked together to ensure schools and clinics were restored to full functionality,” he told reporters after visiting flood victims at SJK Chung Hua Sungai Tengah temporary evacuation centre (PPS) here today. A copy of the audio recording was later shared with DayakDaily.

Uggah further said lessons from last year guide preparations for this year’s flood season.

“In fact, we spent more than RM300 million repairing damaged roads, landslides, schools and rural clinics last year,” he added.

As of 12 pm today, the SDMC reported 11 active PPS across the State due to floods, including eight in Kuching, one in Samarahan and two in Lawas.

The flood relief centres are currently sheltering 1,343 victims from 342 families. – DayakDaily
