Sarawak readies preventive measures to tackle haze crisis — Abg Jo

MIRI, Aug 13: The state government is putting in place, several preventive measures to tackle the haze crisis that will be announced soon.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg said the State Disaster Management Committee will make the announcement after its meeting here, today.


“The preventive measures will be announced by (deputy chief minister) Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas after chairing the state disaster management committee meeting in Miri this afternoon.

“The announcement, hopefully today,” he said after distributing sacrificial meat in light of Hari Raya Aidiladha hosted by Lembaga Amanah Kebajikan Melayu Miri and Darul Ehsan Mosque.

In the past two weeks, the state, in particular Miri, have been blanketed by haze, which has spread out to neighbouring Brunei.

“Fires that occurred in our neighbouring country (Kalimantan) have contributed to the haze situation. We will take some preventive actions on the issue,” he said.

Abang Johari advised the public to reduce outdoor activities during the the haze period.

Meanwhile, as in 9am today (Aug 13), the air pollutant index (API) reading for ILP Miri was still at hazardous level of 348. In SK Kuala Baram, the API reading was 323.

Seven cows were slaughtered at the event, with the sacrificial meat distributed to 10 villages in Miri city. — DayakDaily
