KUCHING, July 24: Sarawak has underscored the importance of strengthening economic cooperation and cross-border development with Brunei, particularly in terms of investment and the development of the Miri-Limbang-Lawas region, as well as tourism in northern Sarawak, which holds strong potential for economic growth.
This was emphasised by Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan during the 26th Meeting on the Implementation of the Exchange of Letters (EOL-26) between Malaysia and Brunei, held yesterday (July 23) in Kuala Lumpur.
According to a statement today, the meeting was co-chaired by Malaysia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, and Brunei Darussalam’s Second Minister of Foreign Affairs, Datuk Seri Setia Erywan Mohd Yusof.
Awang Tengah said that forging closer ties between Sarawak and Brunei in these key areas would not only promote mutual prosperity but also catalyse development in Sarawak’s northern corridor, which borders Brunei.
“The Miri-Limbang-Lawas region and the broader northern Sarawak area hold vast untapped potential for economic advancement, particularly in tourism and investment opportunities that benefit both sides,” he said.
EOL-26 serves as a crucial bilateral platform to review the progress and implementation of agreements and understandings between the two neighbouring countries.
EOL-26 also forms part of the groundwork leading up to the 26th Annual Leaders’ Consultation between Malaysia and Brunei, scheduled to take place next month and to be hosted by Malaysia. The consultation will bring together the top leadership of both nations to reinforce strategic cooperation across various sectors.
Sarawak’s active role in the meeting reflects its commitment to regional diplomacy and aligns with the federal government’s broader policy of economic diplomacy and regional integration.
Malaysia and Brunei, bound by close historical and cultural ties, are expected to continue enhancing bilateral cooperation through such platforms for the mutual benefit and well-being of their people. — DayakDaily
