KUCHING, Oct 5: Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department Datuk Gerawat Gala has revealed that Sarawak has proposed to the Federal government an initiative to enhance the State’s civil service remuneration system due to a significant improvement in State revenue.

Gerawat emphasized that since 2019, Sarawak’s income has surged by half, increasing from an annual average of 4 to 5 billion ringgit to RM12 billion in 2022.

He also mentioned that research into this remuneration initiative is ongoing and is being led by the Sarawak Government Secretary.

“The State is taking substantial steps to elevate the status and dignity of the State civil service to be on par with the standards of developed countries, especially in terms of emoluments, pension systems, and other benefits.

“Improving emolument rates in line with economic development and aligning them with rates in other developed countries, especially in the region, will enhance the well-being, quality of service delivery, and integrity of civil servants,” Gerawat stated.

Gerawat made these remarks while representing Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg during the launch of the Program Malaysia Madani Negeri Sarawak organized by Cuepacs at the Penview Convention Centre (PCC) today.

He acknowledged several points raised by the Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Services (Cuepacs), including the need for the Federal government to review the civil service remuneration system, which has been in use for 23 years.

This included addressing issues related to pensions, regional allowances, and the shortage of housing for civil servants, especially those residing outside urban areas to ensure their comfort, particularly in Sarawak.

“While acknowledging these points, I believe that the national economy should continue to grow and remain financially capable of meeting various requirements, including the concerns raised by Cuepacs,” Gerawat commented.

“I sincerely hope that the current economic stability will persist so that the Federal Government can focus on efforts to build a strong and sustainable economy.”

Gerawat expressed confidence that with a robust economy, Sarawak believes the Federal government can give positive attention to addressing the demands of national civil servants who have made significant contributions to the well-being of the country.

“The Sarawak government will give serious consideration to the issues raised, but the extent to which we have the authority to address these concerns for the benefit of Federal civil servants in this State, the majority of whom are Sarawakians,” Gerawat added.
