KUCHING, April 3: Sarawak Sports Council (MSNS) has welcomed Sarawak Amateur Tenpin Bowling Association’s (ABAS) proposal to up the number of tenpin bowling categories to 20 in the Malaysian Games (Sukma) next year.

According to a report by Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), MSNS director Awang Putrayusrie Awang Reduan said with the proposed increase, Sarawak will have a bigger opportunity to secure more gold medals and realise her mission to become the overall champion at Sukma 2024.

“Why not? If our tenpin bowling squad is strong and we have many athletes that can compete, this would be the opportunity for us to win more gold medals,” he told reporters after officiating at the Tenpin Bowling Basic Course closing ceremony held at Megalanes Sarawak here yesterday.

Initially, tenpin bowling in Sukma 2024 offered 11 gold medals for grabs but ABAS proposed to the Malaysian Tenpin Bowling Congress (MTBC) to add nine more events.

At the same time, Awang Putrayusrie who is also Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC) chief executive officer, revealed that the Sarawak government’s plan to build velodrome can only be implemented after hosting Sukma 2024 due to lack of time.

Thus, Sarawak will not host track cycling events but BMX and road cycling would still continue.

“The confirmation of the venues for Sukma 2024 will be announced end of this month after getting approval from Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

“After the venue has been confirmed, it would be easier for us to carry out promotion and prepare the venues for the hosting of events,” he added. — DayakDaily
