KUCHING, May 19: The Sarawak government proposes to develop a State-owned digital pass known as the “Sarawakpass” to serve as the trusted digital identity for every Sarawakian while facilitating seamless access to a wide array of public and private sector services, including the highly anticipated Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) system.
Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg revealed that this initiative, inspired by the Singpass of Singapore, comes as part of the proposed implementation of a Sarawak Digital Identity Platform and the introduction of Virtual Cards in an effort to enhance cybersecurity, streamline digital services and established a trusted digital ecosystem in Sarawak.
“The current state of identity networks and authentication methods in Sarawak is highly fragmented. Each organisation has its own distinct approach to credentialing and authentication, leading to friction and complications when dealing with multiple entities in both the public and private sectors.
“Therefore we require a ‘Trust Economy’ to support the digital economy. We must put in place a framework of trust that ensures the authenticity and security of the digital transactions,” he said when addressing the Asia Pacific Cybersecurity Conference 2023 gala dinner at a hotel here tonight.
Under this system, he said every Sarawakian would be provided with a “digital passport” that would enable them to carry their credentials securely and share them with various entities, both in the public and private sectors.
“The Digital Identity Platform would not only drive engagement and efficiency but also foster social inclusivity and economic growth.
“It is also expected to further fuel the adoption and usage of the S-PayGlobal into an exponential trajectory,” he said.
One of the key components of the Digital Identity Platform, Abang Johari pointed out, is the introduction of Virtual Cards which can be physical or virtual, depending on the setting, and would grant individuals access to a wide range of services, including government services, public transport, buildings, payments, and discounts.
This innovative approach would eliminate the need for multiple physical cards and enable individuals to conveniently and securely access various services digitally.
To further bolster cybersecurity measures, the proposal also includes the establishment of a Sarawak-based Certification Authority.
Modeled after similar systems in Singapore and the European Union, Abang Johari said this Certification Authority would verify and certify the authenticity and trustworthiness of cyber entities such as websites, domains, and organisations.
“By ensuring secure and encrypted communications, the integrity of signed documents, and tamper-proof transactions, this holistic approach aims to safeguard the interests and security of individuals and organizations alike.
“With this Sarawak would have a more complete package of cybersecurity suites comprising Digital Identity Platform, Sarawakpass and Certification Authority,” he added.
