KUCHING, June 13: Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has urged the medical community to find a solution in ensuring that innovations in artificial intelligence (AI) and biomedical technology contribute to humanity without becoming accessible only to those who can afford them.

Speaking at the opening of the 51st Annual Scientific Congress of the College of Surgeons, which was streamed live on Facebook by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS) today, Abang Johari reflected on the rapid evolution of medical technology, particularly the integration of AI in patient care.

He shared his thoughts after reading ‘A Human’s Guide to the Future’ by Australian biomedical engineer Dr Jordan Nguyen, whose innovations connect the human brain to machines through AI—allowing patients with physical disabilities to control devices, including mind-controlled wheelchairs.

“This is indeed a very successful innovation,” he said.

“But after reading this, I was thinking—there must be a cost to it. The cost could be exorbitant.”

Abang Johari pointed out that as such technologies become more advanced, society will likely face two scenarios: one where innovation improves access to healthcare and contributes to humanity, and another where it becomes a commercial product limited to those who can afford it.

“If it is a commercial entity, the question next is: where is the balance? To people who can afford it, they have this access. But those who are unable to pay the cost may be out of that spectrum.

“I will leave it to the medical community to find a solution, and I look forward to your solution,” he added.

This year’s Congress brings together surgeons, researchers and medical professionals from across the region under the theme ‘Bridging Tradition and Innovation’, highlighting the increasing role of AI and cutting-edge technology in modern surgical practices. – DayakDaily
