KUCHING, Jan 30: Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has expressed deep sympathy and condolences to the victims of the tragic landslide in Miri and those affected by severe flooding across the State.
He assured that the Sarawak government, through the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (JPBNS), will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide necessary assistance to those impacted by the disasters, as reported by Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS).
“The tragedy in Miri has claimed several lives, and I have instructed SDMC chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas to keep a close watch over the situation in the next two to three days, as the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has forecasted continuous rainfall.
“Additionally, the flood situation has severely affected residents in villages, housing areas, and industrial zones, posing significant risks to the affected communities.
“At present, our Deputy Sarawak Secretary is in Miri and Bintulu to assess the latest developments on behalf of the Sarawak government.
“We sympathise with the loss of lives in Miri and hope that other areas remain vigilant given the current situation,” he said when met by reporters after attending a Chinese New Year (CNY) 2025 visit to the residence of National Entrepreneurship Institute (INSKEN) board member Dato Goh Leng Chua yesterday (Jan 29).
Also in attendance were Sarawak Governor Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Ja’afar and his wife, Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi.
Others present included the Premier’s wife, Puan Sri Datuk Amar Juma’ani Tun Tuanku Bujang, Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, and Deputy Minister of Utility and Telecommunication Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi. — DayakDaily
