KUCHING, Sept 16: Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has called for global attention to address critical issues involving climate change.
Abang Johari said the rising global temperatures have caused unpredictable weather patterns due to the increase in carbon emissions.
“Currently, global temperatures are at 1.46 degrees Celsius, and if the temperature goes beyond 1.5 degrees above the pre-industrial level, it will become a problem for the whole world.
“If that happens, you cannot predict the climate, even the monsoon season no longer follow its usual pattern. That is why every country must play its part,” he said during the closing ceremony of the 39th National Chinese Festival held at Waterfront Kuching yesterday (Sept 15).
He said Sarawak now also plays its part in addressing the matter through its initiatives in energy transition, decarbonisation, environmental sustainability, and many others.
He also said Sarawak has taken the initiative by transitioning hydrogen-powered public transport, such as the one implemented in Kuching City, which is recognised as one of the cleanest cities in the world.
He pointed out that although the vehicle is imported from China, the hydrogen used as fuel is produced in Sarawak.
He added that Sarawak is also blessed with abundant water resources that can be turned into energy sources, which is why Sarawak is moving towards green energy production. — DayakDaily
