KUCHING, Oct 10: The Sarawak Police Contingent stands ready to extend manpower and logistical support to assist Sabah in ensuring a smooth and secure state election.

Sarawak Commissioner of Police Datuk Mohamad Zainal Abdullah said the contingent is closely monitoring developments following the dissolution of the 16th Sabah Legislative Assembly, with preparations already underway to provide necessary assistance once requests are made by their counterparts across the border.

“We are always prepared to provide whatever support is needed to ensure the smooth running of the election process, including during the campaign period and polling day.

“As the contingent closest to Sabah, a large portion of the manpower assistance will naturally come from Sarawak,” he said in a pre-recorded interview after officiating the Sarawak Police Contingent’s monthly assembly at the State Police Headquarters today.

Mohamad Zainal said the exact number of personnel to be deployed has yet to be decided and will depend on the needs and requests from the Sabah Police Contingent.

“We will respond accordingly based on their requirements, but rest assured, Sarawak Police are ready to assist whenever called upon,” he stressed.

Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor announced on Oct 6 the official dissolution of the 16th Sabah Legislative Assembly as the current term nears its end, paving the way for the 17th state election to elect 73 assembly members.

The Election Commission (EC) is scheduled to convene a special meeting on Oct 16 to determine key dates and other matters related to the polls, which must be held within 60 days of the dissolution, by Dec 5. — DayakDaily
