KUCHING, Dec 14: A total of 1,262 officers and 1,335 assets are on standby and prepared to be mobilised in response to potential floods during the Northeast Monsoon which is expected to persist until March 2024.
Sarawak Commissioner of Police Dato Mancha Ata has urged residents, particularly those living in low-lying areas, to take precautionary measures, including securing important documents, staying inform of early flood warnings, and promptly relocating to temporary evacuation centre (PPS) in each district if instructed by authorities.
The group of officers on standby comprise 187 senior police officers and 1,075 officers from various departments, formations, and districts within the Sarawak Police Contingent.
“The assignments also involve various rescue agencies, such as Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), Malaysian Civil Defense Force (APM), Sarawak Social Welfare Department (JKMS), and other agencies under the jurisdiction of the National Security Council (NSC),” he said in a press statement today.
Mancha said the Royal Malaysia Police Force (PDRM) is equipped with 1,335 assets, encompassing land, sea, air, and support resources, that are fully prepared for mobilisation.
“This includes 348 land assets, 832 sea or river assets, 11 air assets, and 14 support assets.
“PDRM’s responsibilities include acting as operational commander, with Bomba serving as disaster deputy commander; collaborating with all agencies involved in disaster management; and ensuring the safety of people and property,” he added.
Furthermore, the PDRM Sarawak contingent has actively engaged in two State-level and 28 district-level meetings with various departments and agencies.
Additionally, five rounds of training and flood simulations have been conducted, providing an initial preparation for the potential Northeast Monsoon flood disaster. — DayakDaily
