KUCHING, Nov 8: Sarawak Petchem Sdn Bhd is set to increase its methanol production capacity from 75 per cent to 90 per cent to meet growing demand from China and other Asian nations seeking alternative supplies amid Middle Eastern disruptions.
Speaking to reporters after launching the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Youth Election Machinery at Dewan Kampung Stakan Melayu today, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the demand had increased following the Iran conflict and disruptions to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, prompting industries in Asia to look for alternative sources of methanol.
“What I mentioned earlier was based on information given to me about industries in the Asian region following the Iran war and the problems involving the Strait of Hormuz.
“They depend on methanol produced in the Middle East and are looking for other sources from which they can obtain this raw material for their industries,” he said.
He said methanol was used in various industrial applications, including the production of formaldehyde, and Sarawak Petchem had attracted interest from regional buyers.
“It appears that they are aware of PetChem’s methanol production and have requested the company to supply their markets,” he added.
Abang Johari said Sarawak Petchem was now working to increase its production to meet the additional requirements, with the company targeting an output of 5,000 metric tonnes per day.
“At the moment, they are producing at 75 per cent. This means they have to increase production to 90 per cent to meet the demand,” he said.
He identified China and Taiwan among the countries recording increased demand for Sarawak’s methanol. — DayakDaily
