KUCHING, May 3: The Sarawak Patriot Association (SPA) congratulates the appointment of Datuk Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat as Chief Justice of Malaysia, becoming the first woman and the youngest Chief Justice in the country’s history.
SPA secretary David Hii said the appointment of the Chief Justice was made pursuant to Article 122B of the Federal Constitution, whereby appointment was done by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong on advice of the Prime Minister of Malaysia after consultation with the Conference of Rulers.
“The role, office and title of the Chief Justice is of paramount importance, whereby its most significant role is to protect the supremacy of the Federal Constitution.
“The Judiciary plays a pivotal role in the administration of justice according to the Rule of Law. The Sarawak Patriots cannot emphasise enough the importance that the Judiciary as a whole must be independent and separate from other concentrations of power,” he said in a statement today.
This is imperative to the promotion of a democratic nation, which is also crucial for economic growth, he added.
He further pointed out that the impact of governance based on the Rule of Law will promote political and social stability together with legal certainty, which in turn, will decrease corruption and increase confidence in Malaysia’s economy in a sustainable development.
“The Sarawak Patriots is confident that the Right Honourable Chief Justice will continue to ensure that the Judiciary remains independent and apply fair and equitable laws to the people of Malaysia through its efficient and accessible judicial and legal system in the new Malaysia,” he said. — DayakDaily
