Sarawak partners with Huawei for smart city, digital infrastructure boost

KUCHING, Feb 28: Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC) and Sarawak Information Systems Sdn Bhd (Sains) has entered into a collaboration with Huawei Technologies (M) Sdn Bhd to enhance digital infrastructure in Sarawak.

The collaboration was formalised through two memorandums of understanding (MOUs) between the respective parties on the sidelines of the second day of the Mobile World Congress 2024 (MWC2024) in Barcelona, Spain yesterday (Feb 27).


The MOU documents were exchanged in the presence of Minister of Utility and Telecommunications (MUR) Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi.

According to a media release, the MOU between Sains and Huawei Technologies aims to foster collaboration in critical areas such as smart cities and digital infrastructure. This partnership also intends to capitalise on Huawei’s latest technology to propel Sarawak towards smart city innovation.

The MOU between SDEC and Huawei Technologies focuses on enhancing digital infrastructure and continuity in Sarawak. This collaboration aims to utilise Huawei’s advanced technology to bridge the digital divide, spur economic growth, and establish a digitally inclusive environment across all sectors of society.

SDEC was represented by its chief executive officer (CEO) Sudarnoto Osman, Sains by its CEO Busiai Seman and Huawei Technologies was represented by Jason Deng.

On Monday (Feb 26), Julaihi held meetings and discussions with Starlink@SpaceX USA president Jason Fritch and Global Licensing Market Activation director Rebecca Hunter.

Additionally, he engaged in fruitful discussions with and visited telecommunications giant Ericsson.

Furthermore, the Ministry launched the Ruai Sarawak exhibition space at MWC2024 to showcase Sarawak’s digital economy initiatives. This highlights the Sarawak government’s steadfast commitment to driving innovation and fostering growth in the digital landscape.

The Sarawak government delegation to MWC2024 includes Deputy Minister of Utility and Telecommunications Datuk Liwan Lagang, Deputy Minister of Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment Datuk Len Talif Salleh and Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department Datuk Abdullah Saidol. — DayakDaily
