KUCHING, April 18: Opposition parties in Sarawak are exploring the possibility of regrouping themselves to form a pact to face the upcoming 15th General Election (GE15).
A meeting was convened on Saturday (April 16) at 2pm at a local hotel here to discuss the possibility.
While the meeting proceeded, members of the media who were invited initially for a press conference were later told not to attend, with the reason that the discussion was only in the preliminary stage.
“The journalists were told not to attend at last minute because it was too premature, because it was only a discussion, brain-storming session,” said a reliable source.
The reliable source who fully supports an opposition pact told DayakDaily that the meeting was called by a non-governmental organisation (NGO) with leaders wearing a few hats, including as leaders in opposition parties.
“There is nothing harmful in exploring the matter,” said the source.
According to the source, those attending including representatives from Parti Bumi Kenyalang (PBK), Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) and Sarawak People’s Aspiration Party (Aspirasi).
Though there were no representatives from Democratic Action Party (DAP) and Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), the source revealed the NGO leaders involved are members in these two parties.
“At the moment, it is unlikely that an opposition pact will be formed. It is just too pre-mature. However, anything can happen,” said the source, who believed that the idea was worth exploring.
Another source said it was just an informal meeting, with the aim of looking into getting all local opposition parties to work together.
“There was no formal arrangement. Many local parties are interested because they realise they need to do so after the last disastrous Sarawak Election results,” said this second source. — DayakDaily
