Fatimah: Unregistered marriages among main causes of offspring’s citizenship issues

KUCHING, April 18: The non-registration of marriage legally by parents is among the main causes of citizenship issues for their children, said Minister of Woman, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah.

According to Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) today, Fatimah said such issues would also result in the children being given citizenship status following their mother’s nationality.

“This becomes more complicated if the mother is a foreigner, which causes her child to be categorised as a foreigner as well,” she said during ‘Majlis Sejambak Kasih’ held in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri 2022 at a local hotel in Sibu on Saturday (April 16).

Fatimah pointed out there were also cases where a child is adopted without going through the proper legal process.

She cited an example where a couple adopted a child of another couple who already had a large family, but without going through the processes set by the government.

“As such, I calls on all parents to be more sensitive and responsible so as not to jeopardise the future of their children,” she added. — DayakDaily
