KUCHING, Nov 14: The Sarawak government, through Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros), must be prepared to assert its legal rights under the Distribution of Gas Ordinance 2016, including pursuing court proceedings for an injunction and damages if necessary, to address Petroleum Nasional Berhad’s (PETRONAS) non-compliance.
Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap made this call, noting that the Sarawak government, through Petros, is still engaged in technical discussions with PETRONAS to ensure full compliance with the requirements outlined in the Distribution of Gas Ordinance 2016.
“Petros was appointed as Sarawak’s gas aggregator, and the Sarawak government must demand PETRONAS’s immediate and full compliance with the provisions of the Distribution of Gas Ordinance.
“The continued growth of Sarawak’s economy depends on the availability of natural gas for power generation, commercial industries, and industrial feedstock,” he stated while debating the Sarawak Budget 2025 in the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) today.
Yap also highlighted the Sarawak Gas Roadmap, launched in 2019, which aims to harness the region’s natural gas resources to drive socio-economic transformation.
“The roadmap focuses on maximising domestic utilisation of natural gas through gas-based infrastructure development and promoting industrial growth with value-added activities,” he explained.
Despite these concerns, Yap expressed his support for the Supply (2025) Bill, emphasising that it reflects Gabungan Parti Sarawak’s (GPS) strong commitment to building a better Sarawak that is vibrant, inclusive, fair, thriving, resilient, harmonious, and united.
“GPS have shown time and time again that it is a caring and responsible government and can be trusted to build a Better Sarawak,” he concluded. — DayakDaily
