MIRI, Jan 5: The Sarawak government is considering adding Law and Accounting courses to the list of free education here.

Deputy Health Minister Datuk Lukanisman Awang Sauni said the move was necessary as Sarawak still lacks professionals in fields such as accountants, financial managers, and lawyers.

“Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg has agreed to offer accounting courses and possibly legal courses to Sarawakians,” he was quoted by TVS as saying at the Christmas 2024 and New Year 2025 celebrations at Wisma Persatuan Melanau Miri, here, on Saturday.

“The government wants to give opportunities to those who excel and are interested in continuing their education at the bachelor’s degree level,” he said.

“The Sarawak government wants to ensure that Sarawakians get the same opportunity to study without financial barriers. This is part of our efforts to produce more professionals who can drive the state’s economy,” he added.

Abang Johari had previously announced that from 2026, finance and accounting studies will be among the key disciplines included in the free tertiary education policy at all Sarawak-owned universities.

“This first phase will offer technical and STEM-based courses such as mechanical, electrical and electronic engineering as well as software engineering that are very relevant to the development of the technology-based economy in Sarawak,” said Lukanisman.

By next year, the Sarawak Government said these free courses are expected to be offered at local universities such as Swinburne University, Sarawak University of Technology, Laila College, Centexs, and ICATS.
