KUCHING, July 29: Sarawak Metro today clarified that a sub-contractor involved in the Blue Line Package 2 of the Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS) project did make an offer to a resident of Taman Stutong Indah to tap electricity for one day to support construction works, but the offer was rejected and not pursued.

In a statement, Sarawak Metro said the sub-contractor had only intended to temporarily use power from the residence as their generator set had not yet arrived at the construction site.

“However, after the resident declined the request, the sub-contractor waited for the generator set to arrive and used it instead, effectively closing the matter,” the company stated.

Sarawak Metro was responding to the issue raised by Democratic Action Party Socialist Youth (Dapsy) Sarawak who described the alleged action as “highly unprofessional and unacceptable”.

As construction activities for the KUTS Project intensify in several high-density areas across Kuching and Kota Samarahan, Sarawak Metro reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring its infrastructure contractors take necessary steps to minimise impact on nearby communities.

The company acknowledged that with a project of such scale, spanning key urban areas, some disruption is unavoidable, but it stressed its openness to public feedback and its continued engagement with affected communities.

“In fact, just last week, Sarawak Metro and its infrastructure contractor had also met with residents in the area, including the resident in question, and were currently in the midst of implementing some of the impact mitigation efforts,” it added.

As part of its continued engagement efforts, Sarawak Metro representatives revisited the construction site today to monitor the situation and further consult with residents.

The company expressed gratitude for the constructive feedback from the public, relevant government agencies, and local authorities, and reaffirmed its commitment to delivering a modern, sustainable public transportation system for Greater Kuching. — DayakDaily
