KUCHING, Oct 12: The Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) today observed a minute of silence in remembrance of former Speaker Datuk Song Swee Guan, who passed away on Oct 4 at the age of 84.
DUS Speaker Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar made the announcement at the beginning of the sitting at around 9am, calling on members to stand in honour of the late Song.
“I would like to extend my condolences to the entire family of the late Datuk Song Swee Guan.
“In honour of the late Datuk Song, let us all stand and observe a minute of silence,” he said.
Song, who died peacefully at Sarawak General Hospital at 3.30pm on Oct 4, was the first Mayor of Kuching South, serving from 1988 to 1996.
He later served as a Padungan assemblyman and Bandar Kuching Member of Parliament before being appointed Speaker of the Sarawak Legislative Assembly in November 1996. He held the Speaker’s post until 2000.
His contributions to Kuching South were commemorated in 2021 when Tabuan Jaya Neighbourhood Park was renamed Mayor Song Swee Guan Park in conjunction with his 80th birthday. — DayakDaily
