KUCHING, July 4: Sarawak is at the forefront of exploring and implementing green innovations to tackle critical geoengineering challenges, according to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

Speaking through Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, who represented him at the International Conference on Tropical Geoengineering (Tropicon) 2024 held at the Imperial Hotel, Abang Johari emphasised that green innovation extends beyond technological advancements to include a rethinking of development approaches and environmental stewardship.

Abang Johari highlighted the importance of integrating traditional knowledge with modern science, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, and ensuring that solutions are inclusive and equitable.

“In Sarawak, we have already taken significant steps towards this vision. Our commitment to sustainable development is reflected in our policies and initiatives aimed at conserving our rainforests, promoting renewable energy, and supporting sustainable agriculture,” he stated.

However, he acknowledged that much work remains to be done.

He noted that the conference provides a unique opportunity for sharing successes and challenges, and for forging new partnerships that will propel progress forward.

Sarawak faces unique geoengineering challenges due to its geographical, environmental, and climatic conditions, such as extensive areas of peat soils which complicate construction due to significant settlement and stability issues.

Addressing these challenges requires innovative solutions that incorporate green technologies and sustainable practices to enhance infrastructure, ensure environmental sustainability, and support community well-being.

“This conference holds tremendous potential for Sarawak,” Abang Johari said.

“By bringing together global experts and innovators, we are not just enhancing our knowledge base but also positioning Sarawak as a hub for sustainable geoengineering solutions in tropical regions. Moreover, the exposure and networking opportunities provided will strengthen Sarawak’s ties with international research communities and industries, fostering further innovation and investment in our region.”

Abang Johari expressed confidence that the outcomes of Tropicon 2024 would drive meaningful change and development in Sarawak, resonating far beyond the conference itself. — DayakDaily
