KUCHING, May 14: Sarawak rights activist Peter John Jaban welcomed Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s remarks on the upcoming oil and gas agreement with the Federal Government, but he urged State leaders to approach the negotiations with vigilance and firmness to safeguard Sarawak’s rights, sovereignty, and long-term interests.
Peter John also emphasised the need for transparency and accountability throughout both the negotiation process and the eventual execution of any future agreements with the Federal government.
“Sarawakians have long fought for their rightful control over our oil and gas. We cannot afford to compromise on this again. The future of our economy, our sovereignty, our rights and the well-being of generations to come depend on it,” he stated.
He further highlighted the importance of reinforcing Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (Petros) as the sole aggregator and lead agency for oil and gas in the state.
“This must not only be symbolic but backed by full operational power and legal recognition,” he added.
He stressed on the importance of ensuring that all oil and gas operations within Sarawak remain under the authority and control of the State, as enshrined under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 and the Federal Constitution.
Peter John also reiterated the need for transparency and accountability in any dealings with the Federal Government or industry stakeholders, warning against any repeat of past arrangements that sidelined Sarawak’s interests or placed disproportionate power in the hands of external parties.
“I believed that the people of Sarawak deserve transparency and full fair benefits from the wealth that lies beneath our soil and waters. We must not allow history to repeat itself. Our government must act not only with vision but also with vigilance,” he said.
“Sarawakians will stand united in ensuring that Sarawak remains in full control of its oil and gas sector for the people, by the people, and in the interest of our collective future.” – DayakDaily
