KUCHING, Jan 15: The Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR) has been tasked with reviewing its budget planning this year by allocating funds based on projected deliverables rather than past expenditures, as the State prepares to adopt an outcome-based budgeting system by 2026.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said the upcoming budgeting system won’t base allocations on how much the State has spent in the past but on what it plans to do in the future.

“For example, JKR will need to set clear goals, like building 10,000 kilometers of roads in a specific year, and the allocation will be worked out (based on those targets),” he said during Sarawak JKR Assembly 2025 dinner held at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here earlier tonight.

Uggah, who is also the Sarawak Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development, further directed JKR to prepare a detailed plan for 2025 and present it in the next meeting.

“Next meeting, I want JKR to lay out how many kilometers of road can they complete in 2025 with the present capacity resources that we have.

“This will help us evaluate our performance and move forward,” he added.
