Sarawak, Japanese firm eye deeper cooperation in clean energy, industrial innovation

KUCHING, Feb 25: The Sarawak government and Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organisation (NEDO) engaged in a high-level dialogue to explore potential collaborations in sustainable energy and industrial development.

Held at NEDO’s Head Office in Kawasaki, Japan today, the meeting commenced with opening remarks from NEDO executive director Dr Iimura Akiko and Sarawak Deputy Secretary (Economic Planning and Development) Dato Sri Dr Muhammad Abdullah Zaidel.

According to Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news report, both leaders underscored the importance of international cooperation in driving sustainable development.

Muhammad, who led the Sarawak delegation to Japan, reaffirmed the Sarawak’s commitment to green initiatives and encouraged further collaboration with NEDO.

In the meeting, NEDO provided an overview of its cutting-edge projects and global development efforts, covering key areas such as Carbon Capture, Utilisation, and Storage (CCUS), hydrogen and ammonia technologies, renewable energy sources, and the circular economy.

The Sarawak delegation, in turn, outlined the region’s sustainability blueprint, energy transition strategies, and net-zero goals.

The presentation highlighted Sarawak’s dedication to becoming a leader in environmental sustainability and renewable energy, particularly in advancing green technologies.

Notably, discussions emphasised NEDO’s ongoing support for a microalgae project in Sarawak, aimed at producing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), exemplifying the tangible impact of this collaboration.

Following the presentations, both sides engaged in an in-depth discussion to explore potential joint projects and opportunities for knowledge exchange. — DayakDaily
