MIRI, Nov 30: Sarawak is not greedy but exercises its constitutional right to manage its gas resources responsibly within the law, ensuring that its development creates a positive and lasting impact that benefits both Sarawak and Malaysia.
Highlighting this, the Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg underscored the importance of organic growth in building strong companies, emphasising that success requires strategic alliances and collaboration.
“You cannot be on your own. Petros (Petroleum Sarawak Berhad), PETRONAS (Petroliam Nasional Berhad), and other companies cannot operate in isolation.
“There must be synergy and collaboration between us to advance our economy,” he said during the groundbreaking ceremony for the Miri Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) Power Plant in Lutong, broadcast live on Ukas Channel today.
The Premier highlighted Sarawak’s RM1 billion investment in the Samalaju pipeline, a 65km project to transport natural gas from Bintulu to Samalaju.
“We have to do it ourselves. If we wait for others, they might be unwilling, especially since they also control gas. If they agree, it often comes with conditions, such as setting the gas price and limiting the volume that can be supplied.
“After all, Sarawak produces the gas, so how can we allow others to dictate its terms? Constitutionally, the resources belong to us, and Petros has been appointed as the sole gas aggregator to ensure development is aligned with the law and benefits are shared,” he said, stressing that Sarawak must take the lead in managing its resources.
He emphasised that leveraging Sarawak’s natural resources not only generates wealth for the State but also significantly contributes to Malaysia’s prosperity.
Addressing criticism, Abang Johari reiterated that Sarawak is not acting out of greed but is focused on innovative and responsible resource management to ensure positive outcomes for all.
“Sarawak Energy and Petros are ‘brothers” with Sarawak as their ‘father’. So don’t fight, but work together. Sarawak will share with others. What is important is leveraging technology and collaboration in achieving economic growth,” he said.
Abang Johari also emphasised the importance of preserving unity and political stability as foundational elements for Sarawak’s progress.
“Sarawak’s future is bright, but we must safeguard our unity. With stability and cooperation, we can continue to grow and share our wealth responsibly,” he concluded. — DayakDaily
